1) Why should I take the course?
Upon successful completion, you will have learned how to become a more safe and responsible motorcyclist, will receive a DMV licensing skills test waiver, and possible liability insurance discount
2) Who administers the course?
Mid Tenn Motorcycle Education Center, in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Safety and the State of Tennessee Motorcycle Rider’s Education Program (MREP).
3) What is provided in the course?
We provide the motorcycles, classroom materials, and have loaner DOT approved motorcycle helmets for your use.
4) What do I need to bring with me to class?
Please bring long sleeve shirt or jacket, long sturdy pants, over the ankle footwear (boots), full fingered gloves, your favorite helmet if you have one, and approved eye protection if your helmet doesn’t come with a face shield.
5) Do I need any prior motorcycle experience before coming to class?
It is not essential to have any riding experience. However, you need to have the ability to balance and stabilize a two-wheeled vehicle. If you have not ridden a bicycle in a long time, it would be a good idea to get some practice before attempting to ride a motorcycle.
6) If I’m under the age of 18, can I take the course?
If you are between 15 and 18 years old you will need the signature of a parent or legal guardian in order to take the course. Anyone under the age of 16 that desires their motorcycle license will be required to take the written rules of the road test at the DMV before license is issued. We will give out the study material for this test in class.
7) Do I need to bring a motorcycle to class?
Those taking the Basic RiderCourse will be furnished training motorcycles for class. Those taking the Basic RiderCouse II, ARC, or Bike Bonding will need a licensed and insured motorcycle to take class.
8) Are there tests in class?
Yes, after much study, review and practice students will take a written test in class and a skills test on the range. All the material will be covered and re-covered before test’s are given. Verbal tests are available.
9) Will I get my license after the course?
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be given a completion card and certificate to present to the DMV good for their motorcycle license.
10) What is the cost of the courses?
The Basic Rider Course - $205
The Basic Rider Course II - $109
11) Do I need a motorcycle helmet?
If you do not have a DOT approved helmet, one will be provided for you in class.
12) Do you offer trike and scooter classes?
Yes, we offer both the trike and scooter classes which you take on your own trike or scooter
13) What is the "Women’s Only" Class?
This is a small class for women only, catering to those who haven’t had much--if any--experience on motorcycles or bicycles. It’s a nurturing class where women can learn in a less intimidating environment and receive extra teaching time.
14) How long does the course take?
The Basic RiderCourse is a 2 day course that runs Saturday morning from 8 AM to 5 PM and then on Sunday from 8AM to 5PM.
